War had a profound impact on many others not necessarily involved with fighting on the frontlines. War films with little or no combat: where the wider implications and impact of military conflict become the focus Or we can head to the skies, a stage framed around the sounds of Wagner’s “The Ride of the Valkyries” as American helicopters destroy a Vietnamese village in Apocalypse Now. Or the claustrophobia of the trench in World War I, and Kirk Douglas’s soldiers going “over the top” in Paths of Glory as a wave of human fodder. Think of the Normandy beach landings of Saving Private Ryan the soft, ugly, terrifying sound of bullets embedding in flesh piercing the cacophony of noise, of men screaming in pain and crying out for their mothers. Indeed, many of the most memorable movies about war are distinguished by the visceral drama of their intense combat scenes. War films are understandably associated with military combat.
